Matthew Pope is a versatile and conceptually powerful circus artist working in Perth, Western Australia. Utilising both visual art and theatrical techniques to create circus acts that aim to capture audiences emotionally, physically and draw them into the world Matthew creates. Pope is known for his hypnotising contemporary acts that combine strength, flexibility and dynamic movements, ranging from visually ground breaking acts to cabaret-like burlesque pieces.

My personal highlight was the solo performance on the silks by Matthew Pope, whose movements varied from slow and tender to fervent, angered and almost gruesome. - Nadia Jane, 2018

Observe in idolatry one of the most incredibly athletic circus performers as he bends and twists his body in the most amazing feats of strength and balance right up to the point of drawn in breaths of unison. Hands cover mouths as shock ensues - Amanda Lancaster, 2019.

Matthew Pope is a multi-disciplined artist, and manages to do so much and say so much with so little on stage and on the self. A simple breath from them has millions of layers. - Dollar Dazzler, 2020.

While performing for 9 years, Pope has developed an extensive repertoire in both aerial and ground based circus disciplines. Performing throughout Perth for corporate events, small festivals as well as the annual FringeWorld Festival. Enticing audiences with awe-inspiring acts where he bends, twists, moves and draws you into a sensual, oddly intriguing and immersive experience of art and circus colliding.

Priding himself on creating intriguing, unique and eclectic performance, Matthew blends grace and dynamic movements, resulting in performances that captivate audiences. Pope completed his Bachelor of Arts Honours focusing in live performance art, therefore allowing him to use techniques, concepts and styles of performance to further enhance and challenge the art of circus.
